Back, and better than ever, our friends in Fillmore have started their campaign to qualify and pass a new SOAR initiative for the March 2001 election.

Fillmore citizens launch second effort to pass SOAR

Last city in county without SOAR, most threatened by Newhall

Like the city of Santa Paula that required two attempts to enact SOAR, citizens of Fillmore have organized for a second effort to win SOAR protection. Fillmore is the last city left in the county that needs SOAR protection. It is now the area of the county most threatened by urban sprawl resulting from actions of the Fillmore city council and the massive Newhall project, just a few miles down the road from Fillmore.

The city council of Fillmore wants to extend urban development east on highway 126, closing the gap between Fillmore and LA county sprawl. The city is proposing massive expansion plans that will more than double the size of Fillmore. These plans open development into the scenic Goodenough Road area as well as the banks of the Santa Clara river, including the fish hatchery area. A massive levee is part of the project. The small-town character of Fillmore will be lost forever if the citizens are not successful with their SOAR effort.

The popular and environmentally sensitive Fillmore fish hatchery would be surrounded by a thousand homes if the Fillmore city council's development plan goes forward.
This effort by concerned Fillmore citizens will need the full support of the county-wide SOAR organization. In the last Fillmore SOAR campaign, developers opposing SOAR spent more money per person than was spent in any of the other SOAR campaigns. They know this is fertile ground for massive development profits and their desire to link with Newhall is very strong.

You can help! The SOAR board has been meeting regularly with the citizens of Fillmore to help them coordinate a successful campaign. You can help by making a generous contribution to SOAR to allow the Fillmore citizens enough funds to get their positive message out in the face of the massive mis-information campaign funded by the development community. Printing petitions, gathering signatures, mailing brochures and personally contacting voters takes tremendous amounts of time and money. These hearty and dedicated citizens are putting in tremendous effort. We need to help them with the money.
